BILLCS New Music Report – July 8/26.

MYSTERY ROMANCE IS BACK WITH ANOTHER GREAT RECORD.
MYSTERY ROMANCE, “Losing You”
About the artist: Mystery Romance is a Calgary-based collective which currently revolves around producer and multi-instrumentalist Mike Scullion. It has been a full band over the years, initially releasing the album Human Sexuality in 1989 and the Canadian hit single “So Far Away”. The band went through a couple of iterations before releasing new music again in 2023, which has yielded three albums to date.
About the record: “Losing You” doesn’t sound much like the Mystery Romance of recent albums Electric Love and Flying Thru the Moon, but sometimes change is for the better. Mike Scullion has brought aboard UK vocalist Nicole McMahon, whose voice lends a carefree Sheryl Crow/KT Tunstall tone to the proceedings, as well as Argentinian bassist Hector Ruano and Mike’s own son Caiden on guitar to flesh out the overall sound. “Losing You” has a sad but resolute story which is countered by a breezy, summery melody, featuring a guitar riff written by original member Richard Crooks. Pop and Adult Contemporary radio stations should make room for this one on their playlists.
Other comments: Part of the melody of “Losing You” has me humming 60’s hit “Spooky” by The Classics IV – anyone else?

Mystery Romance return with “Throw It Away,” the second single from their forthcoming album Faces of You. A clear departure from the first single, “Losing You,” the track moves into darker, heavier territory, reflecting the devastating effects of on-line bullying, teenage isolation, and suicide.
Mystery Romance is a Calgary-based Canadian/Irish indie pop/rock band with roots in the late 1980s, known for their feel-good sound and releases like "Harmony & Discord' 2024, and the 2023 album "Flying Thru the Moon" and most recent 2025 Album "Electric Love" that spawned singles "Walking on a Tuesday" "Thing for You" and "Electric Love"" Key members include Mike Scullion and Rhys Green; their music has aired internationally and featured in TV shows. Focusing on recording and video performances This new offering is one of the most meaningful songs released to date.
Mystery Romance has been one to follow, in this everchanging world of the music industry, they have managed to continue to brand their sound, with smooth song productions and strong harmonies.
Originally pulled from an archive of 8-track songs written years ago and later shelved, “Throw It Away” has taken on new relevance today. Its themes of on-line cruelty, emotional isolation, and psychological collapse feel especially urgent in a culture shaped by social-media pressure, cyber-bullying, and harassment among teenagers. Driven by a heavy groove and emotionally charged vocals, the single reveals a harder edge to Mystery Romance’s songwriting. While "Faces of You" continues to reflect the band’s melodic instincts, “Throw It Away” stands as one of the group’s most serious and direct statements to date. Written by Mile Scullion/Rhys Green/Richard Crooks, the recording features a collaboration with Mike’s vocal performance and songwriting experience with son Caiden’s guitar work, adding intensity and emotional weight to the track’s exploration of teen on-line bullying and suicide.
Losing You (2026) My team has been following this band for a few years now and under the management and direction of Current Records label owner Gerry Young, each release is top quality and “Losing You” is proving to be another hit on the horizon. "Record World International"
Electric Love (2025): Their latest full-length album, described as a "genre-bending listening experience" that combines nostalgic synth-pop with modern R&B grooves.
Flying Thru The Moon (2023): An album containing new compositions and important historical recordings.
"Forever For You" (2023): A hit single that reached #2 on Spotify charts shortly after its release.
